Many people come to therapy looking to stop or get rid of certain things. When you experience trauma your protective system becomes really active in order to help you function, survive, and get through that awful event, emotion, experience, etc. Those parts of your protective system you want to get rid of so badly are often there as a response to protect you. This can be confusing though because they manifest in negative ways. Rather than pushing away your protective system, I approach therapy seeking to learn about why your system has those behaviors or thoughts and work with your protective system to help it be integrated and healthy.
